Diego Yacaman Mendez

I am a researcher at the Department of Global Public Health, Karolinska Institutet, and a resident physician in Social Medicine and Public Health at Region Stockholm´s Centre for Epidemiology and Community Medicine (CES).

I completed my medical training in Mexico and then studied in the United States and Sweden. During my PhD at KI, my research focused on methods for precision public health using the examples of risk stratification for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. My work integrates life-course, behavioural, metabolic, and socioeconomic factors to develop and evaluate data-driven approaches for improving risk stratification and implementing precision medicine in prevention and public health. At CES, I work with large-scale population and register data to support public health surveillance, policy development, and analyses of health inequalities in Region Stockholm.

I am involved in teaching and supervision in public health, epidemiology, and biostatistics at Karolinska Institutet. I have served as main supervisor for master’s theses in the Medical Programme and the Master’s Programme in Public Health Sciences, and as co-supervisor for doctoral students at the Department of Global Public Health.
