Caroline Ingre

Adjunct Professor of Neurology at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience as of 1 October 2025. Primary position: Senior physician at Karolinska University Hospital.

ALS is a neurological disease in which the nerve cells that control the muscles gradually start failing. Caroline Ingre studies how the disease arises and develops, and how it can be treated. By following patients over time and gathering blood samples, muscle biopsies, MRI scans, genetic information and other data, she looks for biomarkers that can reveal the disease earlier and predict its course. Caroline Ingre is also director of the Karolinska ALS Treatment Centre, where new ALS drugs are tested in clinical studies.

It is hoped that the results of her research will give rise to earlier diagnosis and more personalised treatment. Her long-term goal is to discover disease-related changes in people with a congenital risk of ALS before symptoms appear, so that the onset of the disease can eventually be prevented or delayed.
