About me

  • Head of Research Support Office and Grants Office at Karolinska Institutet.
    I am leading an office with highly qualified staff that represent a strong mix
    of capabilities within scientific research and administration, scientific
    writing, communication and knowledge within the domains of the European
    Union and other international and national funding bodies.
    Working in the borderland of academia and life science industry I have over
    the years gained a deep knowledge in the various national and European
    funding programs.
    Over the past 20 years, I have work in, and in support of, innovation driven
    research and its financing. I graduated 1994 in Molecular Pharmacology at the
    University of Lund followed by postgraduate training 1995-2000 at Karolinska
    Institutet where I received a doctorate degree in Neuropharmacology. After
    two years post-doc supported by the Swedish Brain foundation, I joined
    Biovitrum AB where I worked 2003-2005 with target validation and assay
    development. In 2005-2012 I worked for Actar AB where main responsibilities
    included in-licensing evaluation and due diligence of research projects,
    management and research strategy. Other major duties included project
    evaluation and planning, infrastructure build-up and recruitment. At
    SwedenBIO my main tasks was to to help Swedish Life Science SMEs obtain
    funding from the EU's Framework Program (FP7) for Research and Technological
    Development, providing information, advice and to identify relevant calls.

Research

  • Research Support Office (RSO) is responsible for providing research support for:
    • Internal and external funding • Corporate collaborations
    • Ethics applications • Clinical studies
    • Data management and research documentation
    • Regulatory compliance for EU and NIH-projects
    • Systems associated with the research process implementation
    RSO is divided into 4 units: GO, GMO, CDO and EEO
    1. Grants Office (GO) provides support for KI internal research funding and pre-award support for external funding. Go also organises training on internal processes for larger applications and coordination of agreements.
    2. Grants Managemant Office (GMO) give support to officers at the departments, preparation and updates of templates and tools, review of time sheets and financial reports (Quality Assurance, QA) and audit coordinations. Projects coordinated by KI (not ERC) are still handled by GMO.

  • Data Office (CDO) provide researchers with support and advice on research documentation, data and information management, Electronic Logbook (ELN), laws and regulations for externally funded projects, "non-financial compliance", as well as clinical trials, ethics and personal data management.
    4. External Engagement Office (EEO) work to create new opportunities for KI researchers (including PhD students and postdocs) for partnerships with industry and other external organisations. We provide support in setting up and managing long-term structured partnerships. Provide advice and support in the early stages of the contracting process for such partnerships. Provide mentorship programmes, inspirational activities and support to help researchers achieve impact and use of their knowledge and how their research can address United Nations Agenda 2030. Educate and advise PhD students, postdocs and researchers for a future career inside and outside academia.

    scientific writing, communication and knowledge within the domains of the
    European Union and other international and national funding bodies.

    Together with the head of a department Björn Kull makes decisions for:

    Applications to the EU, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other foreign donors
    Funding agreements with these contributors
    Cooperation agreements with other grant recipients, possible additions and changes to existing applications and agreements
    Related reports and system registrations for these contributors
