About me

  • Born in 1943. After completing his military service, Bengt Linderoth began studying behavioral sciences at Stockholm University, where he earned a bachelor's degree and later a master's degree with a thesis on the effects of head trauma (concussion), i.e., a thesis primarily in the field of neuropsychology, in 1973.
He then studied medicine at the Karolinska Institute from 1974 and became a licensed physician in 1980. After completing his internship, Bengt began clinical service.

He started in neurology but quickly switched to neurosurgery, both at the Karolinska Hospital.
With a background in neuropsychology, including a great deal of neurophysiology and research methodology, Bengt was quickly drawn into Björn Meyerson's field of activity and research: functional neurosurgery.
Bengt quickly learned the operative procedures in this field and in general neurosurgery during his rotation between sections.
Early on, he began studying rats at the Department of Pharmacology under Ernst Brodin, and his basic studies continued in various fields but using different methodologies, including laser Doppler examinations on animals undergoing spinal cord stimulation.

Studies for a doctoral degree were initiated and, in addition to compulsory courses, included studies on cats with microdialysis in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord.

The thesis, a compilation of studies on cats/rats and clinical studies on humans, was defended in 1992 with good results.

In connection with the studies for the thesis, contacts were established with several foreign and Swedish universities (Gothenburg and Umeå).

Bengt subsequently spent 1-2 months per year at Oklahoma University with Prof. RD Foreman at the Department of Physiology, where a series of flow studies on rats was initiated. Over the following years, the studies were expanded to include a larger research group with dogs as test subjects and studies of heart function during ischemia using electrical stimulation of the spinal cord.
At KS, studies were conducted on patients with cardiac symptoms due to ischemia, which led to the group's animal studies receiving considerable international attention. The studies were conducted in both the US and Canada at various universities in Halifax, Quebec, and Montreal, as well as in Johnson City, with different compositions of research groups.
Linderoth currently has more than 243 published research reports and over 100 reviews, as well as several chapters in various international book series.
Bengt has supervised five doctoral students to graduation and has been co-supervisor for several others, both abroad and in Sweden. He has also been an opponent and advisor to several doctoral projects both in Sweden and abroad.
Professor of Functional Neurosurgery 2005 KS/KI.
Head of the functional neurosurgery section at KS 1998-2011
A Swedish book entitled “Neurokirurgi” (Neurosurgery) was recently published in July 2024 by Studentlitteratur Lund. Linderoth contributed to the editing and text input in the chapter: Functional neurosurgery with Linderoth's successor
    G Lind.

Previously, a book was published in 1998: Basic Neurosurgery, Red P. Mellergård.
Linderoth has also contributed to the volume HJÄRNAN (The Brain) in Olson L & Josefsson A, Ed1 and 2, as well as to several other modern books. See PubMed or book lists.
Advances in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, two volumes

Linderoth has been awarded honorary lectures, prizes, etc.:
Aix en Provence. French Neuromod Chapter: Paul Cezanne Hon. Lecture 1999.
    Umeå University: Mångberg Prize 2006
North American Neuromodulation Society: Lifetime Achievement Award 2009
    Krishna Kumar honorary lecture 2015
Oslo University. Vilhelm Magnus Honorary Lecture. 2015
Krishna Kumar honorary lecture No. 2: 2019
SV Medical Association: David Ingvar Prize for Neurophysiological Research  2017. International Neuromodulation Soc. Barcelona 2022: “Giant of Neuromodulation” Prize.
INS Barcelona  Best abstract prize 2022

After retiring in 2011, he continued to work extra hours at the clinic for difficult cases, such as SEM + counseling at  Huddinge Pain Unit + Danderyd Hospital,  to strengthen knowledge at these units.
As this work gradually wound down, Bengt continued with research alone – a continuation of the stereotactic studies on ALZ patients, but this time initially only method improvements and later, when an "ALZ model on mice became available, with trials using this model and eventually also with microimplants for intracerebral substance release.

March 2025:  A total of 233 scientific publications +  > 100 reviews and book chapters
    Number of citations 15, 841;
    h-index 76.
