About me

  • I am a researcher in the Department of Laboratory Medicine's Division of Clinical Physiology at Karolinska Institutet.

My academic background is in exercise physiology, for which I was awarded a Ph.D. in 2011. I then went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship in neuroscience under the supervision of Professor Brun Ulfhake (neuromuscular adaptations - 2011, 2018).

I am currently working on the SPAF project (SPAF-1958 - Sweden Longitudinal Physical activity and fitness Cohort Born in 1958).

My research has focused on the adaptation of skeletal muscle to different types of exercise training and proposing the theory of the intermittent nature of the human body with an emphasis on skeletal muscle plasticity. My papers published in prestigious journals such as Biology, Molecular Neurobiology, Physiology and Behaviour and the European Journal of Sport Sciences highlight my ability to translate complex scientific concepts into impactful studies, including a "Best Paper Award" in 2022.

Beyond research, I have a strong history of leadership in both academia and sport. As the Head of the Department of Sports Science, I established innovative programs, including MSc courses in Exercise Physiology and state-of laboratories for animal and tissue studies. In addition to my academic achievements, I am an international coach and lecturer in athletics (former national team member and coach). I was the body/strength conditioning coach for the national soccer college team and national para-swimming. In the classroom, I pride myself on engaging students across diverse topics such as Human Anatomy and Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Science of Training and Biochemistry in training.
