About me

  • I obtained my MPharm, MD and PhD at Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden . After positions as Associate Professor and Senior Lecture in Pharmacology at Uppsala University I am since 1992 Professor in Clinical Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet and Senior Consultant at Theme Aging, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm.

    I have pioneered in field of cholinergic neurotransmission, nicotinic acetylcholine receptors as well as in the development of amyloid PET imaging, introducing the multi-tracer PET concept , evaluating drug mechanism of action and visualising reactive astrogliosis and tau pathology in patients with Alzheimer´s disease (AD) and dementia disorders. My frontline research findings have been published in leading journals (500+ publications, H-index 79) and I have been PI for more than 15 clinical PET trials and received several prizes and rewards.

    I am leading a research team with a major focus on developing early diagnostic biomarkers and new drug targets in AD and other neurodegenerative proteinopathies.

Research

  • Our research has a translational multimodal molecular imaging approach with the mission of further understanding of the time course and important interactions between different neurodegenerative pathophysiological processes in brain such as deposition of amyloid and tau, neuroinflammation especially reactive astrogliosis and synaptic dysfunction .

    We have a great interest in performing longitudinal brain PET studies in presymptomatic carriers of different forms of autosomal dominant AD as well as in Down´s syndrome.

    We also want to relate pathological brain imaging and cognitive findings to fluid biomarkers for a further understanding of how early can we detect AD and other related neurodegenerative disorders and what are the implications for new promising treatment strategies.

    Furthermore, we have ongoing studies aiming to develop new selective PET tracers for alpha-synuclein, 4R tau, as well as alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, the latter as a synaptic marker.
