Collaboration in the United Kingdom

KI collaborates with British universities, hospitals, and organisations. Research collaborations are spread over many different research fields and there are several KI researchers with affiliations to British institutions.   

KI has agreements at different levels with different institutions in UK, but the majority of the activities with British collaborators takes place between researchers and are not centrally regulated. There are a few exceptions, where collaborative agreements, projects and activities are initiated and supported centrally.

Collaborative agreements

KI has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with the following universities:

• King’s College London
• The University of Edinburgh 

King’s College London

Within the collaboration there are different activities taking place, including research at various areas of research but in particular cancer and neuroscience, student exchange agreements with the biomedicine programme, as well doctoral students’ collaborations. The two institutions together with Keio University in Japan and Peking University Health Science Centre in China offers an annual summer course for doctoral students, where the four universities take turns to host the course. KI doctoral students interested in attending the course must apply through the KI course catalogue for doctoral courses. 

The University of Edinburgh (UofE) 

KI and UofE have a long tradition of collaboration in research and education. As part of KI’s overarching collaborations the British universities, KI has supported two doctoral programmes at UofE funded by the British Medical Research Council (MRC).

The MRC DPT Precision Medicine Programme is a joint doctoral programme at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow. KI is supporting  the doctoral programme by encouraging KI researchers to become co-supervisors, hosting doctoral students in labs but also grant doctoral students enrolled in the MRC DPT Precision Medicine Programme the right to be prioritised in the same way as KI doctoral students.

ECAT Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD programme is a clinical doctoral programme at the University of Edinburgh. KI is supporting  the doctoral programme by encouraging KI researchers to become co-supervisors and/or hosting doctoral students enrolled in the ECAT Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD programme in labs.

Both  UofE and KI are part of Eurolife.

Imperial College London

As part of KI’s overarching collaborations the British universities, KI has supported a doctoral programmes at Imperial funded by the British Medical Research Council (MRC).

MRC MultiSci - Multidisciplinary Science in Health Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) at Imperial College London. KI is supporting the doctoral programme by encouraging KI doctoral students within in immunology, infection and cancer to network in a “buddy initiative”  with doctoral students from the MRC MultiSci,  researchers to become co-supervisors and/or hosting doctoral students enrolled in the MRC MultiSci programme in labs.  The doctoral students can develop networking skills and build their personal network. 

Stockholm Trio and University College London

Since 2020 Stockholm Trio (KI, KTH and SU) has partnered together with University College London (UCL) in the initiative the UCL Cities Partnership Programme (CPP) Stockholm. The partnership includes to support collaborative research projects and to build on the existing partnerships between the three institutions. The aim of the fund is to catalyse new collaborations and in the longer term to build international teams who are well positioned to apply for external research funding. 

Bachelor's and master's education

KI study programmes have bilateral exchange agreements with British universities.

Doctoral education

A majority of the doctoral students that spend time at KI are doing so outside formal agreements. In most cases, the doctoral students are visiting KI within existing research collaborations. Post doctoral education

The majority of the international researchers doing a post doc at KI stay without a formal agreement between the institutions. The activities take place between researchers  are not centrally regulated.

All postdoctoral positions are located at KI's departments and most are also initiated from the departments. KI has no central post doc agreements with any British university.

Collaboration awards

Karolinska Institutet  offers a travel awards to increase mobility to a selected number of UK universities. These calls are announced on ki.se.
