The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in areas of medical science including molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. The department offers an international study and working environment, including about 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel.
Finnish Academy of Science and Letters is the largest general scientific and academic society in Finland. It is a learned society covering the full range of academic disciplines and it selects its new members on their academic and scientific merits. The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters is divided into two Sections, representing science and the humanities, with a fixed number of members representing each discipline. Ordinary membership is granted to meritorious Finnish scholars, by invitation only, and particularly outstanding individuals or patrons of science or the arts may be named as honorary members.
Luca Jovine receives the grant of 4.75 MSEK for his crystallographic studies of the conception process.
Michael Sjöström has recently received a medal from the University of Granada for strong academic and scientific leadership in the EU funded HELENA project and The European Youth Heart Study . This collaboration has so far resulted in 30 doctoral thesis at KI and Spanish Universities, mainly the Granada University. This project is still on-going and will probably continue for a sustained period.
The long-term objective of the VINNMER programme is to help to increase the number of postgraduate that can become the leaders of the future at universities/colleges, centres, research institutes and companies. VINNMER apply positive action to achieve equality effects for an underrepresented gender in fields where need for equalizing imbalances is great at the level of professor or similar position.
