Visiting Professor of Quantum Science for Life Sciences at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery as of 1 September 2025

Val Zwiller aims to make quantum detectors a new life-science tool. He uses these sensitive detectors to build a new kind of quantum microscope able to detect single protons and take real-time images of biological tissue at depth, as well as to track novel biomarkers. The aim is to push the spectral limits of microscopy and open new possibilities for studying cells, molecular interactions and disease mechanisms.

The technique can also be used to study the brain. By measuring extremely weak light signals and studying how they pass through brain tissue, professor Zwiller will be able to create three-dimensional maps of cerebral blood flow and thereby obtain a non-invasive window into brain physiology.

It is hoped that the technique will give scientists and health care professionals new opportunities for understanding diseases and pave the way for personalised care. In the longer term, his aim is to translate the technology into robust, user-friendly instruments for universities, hospitals, pharmaceutical research and biotechnology.
