Additional Senior PI Affiliated to SRP Diabetes
The node of SRP Diabetes at Umeå University now includes two different research groups, where the new addition is headed by Professor in Endocrinology Tommy Olsson. Dr Olsson completed his MD in 1977 at Umeå university. He became a specialist in internal medicine in 1985 and in endocrinology 1987. He defended his thesis in 1990: Endocrine studies in stroke patients, main supervisor was professor Kjell Asplund. His postdoc training was done at the University of Edinburgh 1992-3, with professor Jonathan Seckl. He became professor in medicine at Umeå university in 2000 and is professor in endocrinology at the same university since 2003. Dr Olssons research is focused on obesity and obesity-related complications, mainly type 2 diabetes. This includes aspects on tissue-specific alterations in glucocorticoid and lipid metabolism with emphasis on the effects of intervention by diet and exercise.
