The VirusTech Core Facility
The purpose of our core facility is to produce and distribute high quality viral vectors to researchers within Karolinska Institutet and academic researchers world-wide. We specialize in the production and concentration of lentiviruses, gammaretroviruses and adeno-associated viruses.

Adeno-associated viruses (AAV)
AAV pseudotypes show different tissue tropisms in vivo, improved performance in terms of transduction efficiency, and fewer problems associated with humoral and/or cellular immunity.

Lentiviruses (LV)
The capacity to efficiently transduce nondividing cells, shuttle large genetic payloads, and maintain stable long-term transgene expression are attributes that bring lentiviruses to the forefront of gene delivery vehicles for research.

Gammaretroviruses (γRV)
The gammaretrovirus (γRV) is a sister genus to the lentivirus clade. Like the lentivirus, it is a member of the Orthoretroviridae subfamily of the retrovirus family, they share common properties but the main difference between these two viruses is that gamma-retroviruses only infect dividing cells.

Publications and picture gallery
Some of the publications related to research that has been conducted at the VirusTech Core Facility are listed on this page. We also share a few examples of what can be achieved with viral particles as gene transfer tools in vivo and in vitro.

Biomedicum Common Virus Laboratory BSL-2 (room D0411)
The Biomedicum Common Virus Laboratory BSL-2 (room D0411), aims to provide a suitable, safe and up-to-date virus work laboratory open for researchers at KI to perform studies related with virus production, infection/transduction and functional analysis. The Laboratory is equipped with class 2 biosafety cabinets, carbon dioxide incubators, fridges/freezers, centrifuges, and fluorescence microscopes.
