3D imaging of whole tissues: Opening a new window into regenerative medicine
The Center of Live Imaging of Cells at Karolinska Institutet (CLICK) was established more than 10 years ago and is today one of KI’s largest core facilities with more than 150 active users. Many biological and pathological processes require 3D or 4D (time-lapse 3D) imaging to fully comprehend their nature, for example the construction of an organ or neuronal network formation and activity.
This becomes especially important in regenerative medicine, in which the goal is to replace, engineer or regenerate human cells, tissues or organs to restore or establish a normal function. This infrastructure support will provide 3D imaging of whole tissues to researchers at KI by applying the latest light-sheet microscopy and sample preparation techniques.
A pre-clinical and clinical resource of GMP IPS cells for regenerative research
The iPS Core is a non-profit human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell facility founded by Dr Anna Falk in 2013 and located at Karolinska Institutet. Our mission is to provide user-friendly premium iPS cells and neural stem cells for academic research. iPS Core can offer a wide range of services from iPS cell derivation to full research projects, starting with a skin biopsy and ending with analysis of mature neurons.
The iPS Core facility will extend by adding a new platform to its repertoire in form of a resource of pre-clinical and clinical GMP iPS cells widely available to KI scientists for regenerative medicine applications. By building up a resource of highly standardised iPS cells this platform will provide KI scientists with robust and consistent cells for transplantation experiments initially in animal models and later also for clinical trials in humans with GMP iPS cells. Clinical grade embryonic stem cells
As embryonic stem cells (hESCs) have the potential to generate any cell type of the adult human body they play a central role in the field of Regenerative Medicine. However, as hESCs have not yet been derived in a licensed GMP tissue facility under defined and xenofree conditions, the cell lines have limited potential for clinical studies or therapy.
This infrastructure will establish clinically compliant hESC of the highest quality within Vecura, a GMP facility at Karolinska University hospital to provide researchers at Karolinska Institutet and elsewhere with embryonic stem cells that meet the highest standards for clinical translation. MedH Flow Cytometry Facility
Flow cytometry is a key biomedical research technology that facilitates sensitive multiparametric analysis and isolation of specific cell populations from complex cell mixtures. The MedH Flow Cytometry Facility is a non-profit core facility located within the Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine on the Karolinska Institutet (KI) Huddinge campus.
Dedicated to advanced fluorescent flow cytometry, the facility currently houses three analysis instruments and two high-speed cell sorters. It provides equal access to all interested researchers at KI and Karolinska Hospital, regardless of their affiliation. The facility strives to provide each user with skilled services, education and training to perform state-of-the flow cytometry. More info
Establishment of a Regulatory Support Function for the Development of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) Intended for Clinical Use
The Karolinska Cell Therapy Center (KCC) supports and facilitates the development of quality assured Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products and cell therapy products for unmet clinical needs. KCC guides the client through the required steps from research product to a quality assured product that can be used in clinical trials. A Priority Board evaluates, approves and prioritizes projects within KCC.
The Vecura GMP-facility is an integrated part of KCC and is approved by the Medicinal Products Agency for the manufacturing of cell therapy products for clinical trials and by the Health and Social Care Inspectorate for handling cells and tissues. Vecura
Light sheet technology platform
Given that life occurs in 3D-space and time, resolving all these dimensions is critical for our understanding of physiology and disease. Therefore, being able to simultaneously record several molecular events, with high resolution in time and the 3D-space, in both living cells and tissues, is today an absolutely critical component of biomedical research.
We have therefore established a core facility for live cell imaging at the KI-Huddinge campus, providing state-of-the-art technologies and services in the area of advanced light microscopy. More info
