About me

  • Prof. Nagihan Bostanci, DDS, PhD, AFHEA is Head of International Affairs and Professor of Inflammation Research (Periodontics). She is also Program Director for 

  • postgraduate degree courses “Master´s Degree in Odontology and Oral Health". She is the elected President of Microbiology/Immunology Group of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). She also served as the president of the IADR Periodontal Research Group.

    Education
    Prof. Bostanci has a PhD in Periodontology (University of London, UK) and received advanced specialty training in Periodontology (Ege University, Izmir, Turkey, and Eastman Dental Institute, University College London, UK). She attained her Habilitation (Venia Legendi) at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, earning her the title of Docent in Oral Biology and Periodontology. In early 2020, she was Sir Thomas Kay Sidey Visiting Professor at University of Otago, New Zealand.

    Academic honours, awards and prizes
    - IADR Sigmund Socransky Young Investigator Award, by the Periodontal Research Group of the IADR (2014).
    - IADR/Philips Oral Healthcare Young Investigator Research Grant Award, by the Periodontal Research Group of the IADR (2009).
    - Sir Wilfred Fish Prize, by the British Society of Periodontology (2007).

Research

  • Prof Bostanci´s group aims to better understand periodontal homeostasis and the underlying mechanisms of inflammatory periodontal pathogenesis. The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of periodontal care delivered through early and accurate diagnosis, and development of innovative targeted therapeutic approaches. Teaching

  • Prof. Bostanci has a postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (CILT), from Queen Mary University of London, and is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Association (AFHEA), UK. Her primary area of teaching has been in periodontology, including periodontal diagnostics, periodontal physiology, anatomy, histopathology, mechanisms of pathogenesis, inflammatory pathways and genetics. She has been delivering these topics at different level of expertise to the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum.
