Mark Lindholm

I work as a lecturer and specialist dentist in periodontology at Karolinska Institutet since 2024. I graduated as a dentist in 2015,   completed my PhD in 2022 and became a specialist in periodontology in 2023, all at Umeå University.

My main research interest is within oral microbiology with emphasis on periodontal microbiology.

My research area is oral microbiology and periodontology, where I mainly focus on periodontitis in adolescents and more specifically on bacteria involved in this process (mainly Aggregatibacter species).

My research aims to study how different microbiological factors influence periodontitis in adolescents and how they affect the progression of the disease. I am also interested in the epidemiology of these diseases.

By understanding these processes, I hope to contribute to new knowledge regarding the prevalence of this disease in adolescents and also understanding the pathogenesis of the disease. In the long term, this could lead to new and more precision-oriented treatments for these patients. 

As a lecturer, I am responsible for the course "Vetenskapsteori och forskningsmetodik inom odontologi" but I am also involved in several courses in the programmes for dentistry and dental hygiene. In these courses I lecture in the field of periodontology and oral microbiology, but I also teach/supervise the students when treating patients (clinicial periodontology and periodontal surgery).

I am currently supervising one dentist who is performing the postgraduate programme in periodontology and co-supervising a PhD-student.
