About me
- Maria earned her M.D. degree from Linköping University in 2020. Since then, she has been deeply involved in the field of cell and gene therapy. Beginning her journey as a junior physician at Karolinska’s Department of Cell Therapy and Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation (CAST), Maria later undertook her Medical Internship (AT) at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge. During this tenure, Maria joined Prof. Mielke's group as a PhD candidate, spearheading a groundbreaking project aimed at pioneering gene therapy for sickle cell disease in Sweden within three years. This pioneering endeavor is poised to establish a framework for the implementation of other CRISPR-based gene therapies at Karolinska University Hospital in the near future.
Maria's project delves into innovative CRISPR-based methodologies to modify autologous hematopoietic stem cells, with the ultimate goal of utilizing them in autologous stem cell transplantation, offering hope for a potentially curative treatment down the line. Currently, Maria adeptly balances her doctoral laboratory work with part-time clinical shifts as a fully licensed physician. In this capacity, Maria contributes to the care of patients with hematologic disorders and cancer, supporting those undergoing life-saving treatments like CAR T-cells or TILS. Maria's multifaceted involvement underscores her unwavering dedication to advancing both research and clinical care in the realm of cutting-edge therapies.
