About me

  • I'm a dedicated PhD student at Karolinska Institute specializing in molecular biology with a focus on cancer drug discovery. With a solid foundation in biology and oncobiology, I'm dedicated to advancing cancer research. My current research revolves around pioneering strategies for targeting cancer at the molecular level, aiming to develop innovative therapies that can potentially transform cancer treatment outcomes.

Recognized for my strong teamwork skills and collaborative spirit, I actively engage with colleagues and researchers to drive progress in our projects. I thrive on challenges and firmly believe that diversity in thought and collective effort lead to breakthroughs.

In addition to my academic endeavors, I enthusiastically engage in a range of extracurricular activities, spanning from sports and language acquisition to dedicated community volunteering.

I value professional relationships and am always open to new opportunities for growth and collaboration. Let's connect and explore ways to leverage our shared interests in molecular biology and cancer research to make a significant impact in our field. Contact me at maria.joao.pires@ki.se.

Research

  • I am strongly committed to advancing the field of cancer biology, with a specific focus on the roles of Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARPs). My research extends into the innovative realms of PROTACs (proteolysis-targeting chimeras) and their potential in targeted protein degradation. Additionally, my work is dedicated to preclinical and clinical drug screens, aiming to identify and develop new therapeutic agents that can effectively combat cancer. Through my research, I strive to contribute to the understanding and treatment of cancer, ultimately improving outcomes for patients globally.
