About me

  • General

    Since 2004, I have a combined position as Senior Lecturer in Urology combined with a clinical position as Senior Consultant in Urology. For the past 5 years, I have also been the Head of the department CLINTEC.

    Senior Consultant in Urology.

    In 1994, I started my specialization in urology and in 2000 I graduated as a specialist. After an initial phase with broad mixed benign and malignant urology, I today focus mostly on general benign urology and andrological urology, including reconstructive surgery in external genitalia.

    Academy - teaching

    In 2001 I was given responsibility for the basic urological education for future doctors at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge and from 2007 I have been course coordinator and examiner for the semester-long course where urology is one of the included parts - today called Clinical Medicine 3 - surgery. I have experience of most common forms of teaching and examination where the goal has always been to get the students to reach the highest possible level of knowledge (SOLO), skill level (Miller) and clinical reasoning skills while maintaining joy and professionalism. Already in 2013, I started using Team Based Learning as a teaching method, which is now the main pedagogical method in today's 6-year medical programs. In 2015, my MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) was completed where several thousand students from more than 200 countries received a basic urology course via 50 instructional videos and SBA questions.
    Academy – research

    In 2002, I defended my thesis on quality of life after curative treatment for advanced bladder cancer. I have since supervised several doctoral students, one of whom is the main supervisor. My broad general urological knowledge has led to a broad interdisciplinary and interprofessional research network and that I have become a frequently hired opponent and examining committee member in various research areas. In 2012, I became an associate professor in urology.
    Leadership
    Since 2021, I have been Head of the Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology (CLINTEC), one of Karolinska Institutet's most clinically oriented departments. For four years I was chairman of the Swedish Urological Society and for more than 15 years I have been editor-in-chief of our urological profession's journal "Svensk Urologi". Prior to my appointment as Head of Department, I was Vice Chair (Vice-Dean) of the Committee for Undergraduate and Master's Education.
