Research description

The research of me and my group is focused on basic immunological tolerance mechanisms in autoimmunity and inflammation. To investigate complex multifactorial diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) or Multiple sclerosis (MS), good in vivo models are key. We are using these models to adress specific molecular targets known to have impact on inflammation and autoimmunity. One research project is focused on the role of CTLA-4, a critical negative regulator of T cell activation. CTLA-4 is expressed by all activated T cells but have a specific role in CD4+Foxp3+ Regulatory T cells as a suppressive mechanism. CTLA-4 is used clinically in cancer as well as RA patients and we are investigating its role in different developmental stages of the immune system to deepen our knowledge of the function of this important immune regulator with the aim to improve its use.
