About me

  • Professor of Cardiology at the Department of Medicine, Solna.

I was born in 1960 in Solna, in northern Stockholm. I studied medicine at Karolinska Institutet, was accepted as a doctoral student in 1985, and defended my thesis in 1988 on the importance of neuropeptide Y for blood flow regulation. I was certified as an MD in 1991. The same year, I became an Associate Professor of Pharmacology at Karolinska Institutet. In 1997, I received specialist competence in both cardiology and internal medicine. In 1998, I became an Associate Professor of cardiology. Since 1991, I have held various positions at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna, for the past six years combined with a clinical research position (50 percent) from the Swedish Research Council.

I have held numerous positions of trust, including being a member of the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation's Research Council and being part of the R&
  • D management team at the Karolinska University Hospital. Since 2006 I am Head of the Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, Solna.

On 1 June 2008, I was appointed Professor of Cardiology at Karolinska Institutet.

Research

  • Myocardial infarction is the most common cause of death in Sweden and the rest of the Western world. Factors linked to heredity and lifestyle are behind the atherosclerotic plaques that form in the walls of the coronary arteries. If the plaque ruptures, a blood clot occurs, the blood flow is restricted, and the patient has a heart attack. With my research, I want to contribute to fewer people getting a heart attack and to better heart function in those who have suffered an acute heart attack.
