About me

  • I’m a pediatrician and senior consultant neonatologist at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm. I graduated from medical school in 2002 (Karolinska Institutet), finished Pediatric training in 2013 and Neonatology training in 2017. I defended my thesis “Consequences of preterm birth on lung function, physical activity and exercise capacity” in May 2017 at Karolinska Institutet. I was appointed as clinical research fellow at the University of Western Australia in Perth, Australia 2013-2015. My PostDoc project was in Ola Andersson’s group at the department of clinical Sciences at Lund University. The PostDoc project included research about effects of cord clamping time on bilirubin levels and the development of neonatal jaundice.

I am the president of the Swedish Neonatal Society since 2022.

I’m a research group leader (PI) of the MoM/Cords group at the division of Pediatrics at the department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology (CLINTEC) at Karolinska Institutet.

Research

  • Clinical research in the field of Pediatrics and Neonatology. The two main areas of interest comprise research on neonates exposed to maternal pharmacological treatment during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and effects of delayed cord clamping and early skin-to-skin care of term and preterm infants. I also conduct studies about long-term follow-up of preterm infants with particular focus on physical activity.

The ongoing projects are further described in the presentation of the research group.

Teaching

  • I have a long experience of teaching of medical students as lecturer, as clinical supervisor and as a supervisor of master theses. In addition, I have a long experience as clinical teacher of younger colleagues in Neonatology. Between 2022 and 2024 I was appointed as director of studies for pediatric residency at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge.

The purpose of the SUCCECS study is to improve neonatal health and survival after emergency Cesarean section.  We aim to perform a multicenter study to evaluate a new approach to resuscitation of non-breathing neonates born by Cesarean section. Study design: Multicenter study with stepped wedge cluster randomization.- Population: Singleton term neonates born by emergency Cesarean section.- Intervention: When in need of life support, the neonate will be put on a platform with the cord intact, close to the mother. The neonatal team will give respiratory support with sustained cord circulation, following neonatal CPR guidelines. Cord clamping will be performed after respiration has been established and at the earliest after three minutes.- Control: Management according to standard care, including immediate cord clamping.- Outcome: Composite outcome of admission to neonatal care for predefined criteria (asphyxia at birth, respiratory distress, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, hypoglycemia) and death before admission. Short and long-term neonatal outcomes and adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes will be evaluated.Importance: A reduction in neonatal admissions can benefit both the neonate and their parents, while also yielding positive economic implications for healthcare systems.Time plan: Preparations started in 2022, supported by the SRC planning grant no. 2021-06581. Training of staff will begin in early 2025, while the initial intervention rollout is planned for 2025.
