Jennifer Härdfeldt

I am a postdoctoral researcher in the CardioMetabolic Unit (CMU) at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge, Karolinska Institutet. My research focuses on human lipoprotein biology and mechanisms of atherosclerosis, with particular interest in processes that are not captured by conventional circulating lipid measurements.

I completed my PhD in Medical Sciences at Karolinska Institutet in 2024 with the thesis Exploring lipoprotein characteristics in human cardiometabolic disease. My background combines nutrition, lipid metabolism and translational human research, and my current work aims to bridge mechanistic studies of lipoproteins with cardiometabolic disease

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease develops through complex interactions between lipoprotein metabolism, endocrine regulation, inflammation, and tissue remodelling. My research aims to identify mechanisms that contribute to cardiometabolic disease but may not be fully captured by conventional measurements in circulating blood.

I use a translational human-research approach that combines detailed lipoprotein profiling, functional LDL assays, analyses of modified lipoproteins, proteomics, and network-based analysis.

Course organiser for the doctoral-level course Lipid and Lipoprotein Metabolism: Basal Aspects and Clinical Significance and co-supervise doctoral students within cardiometabolic research. I have also supervised MSc and Erasmus students in nutrition, biomedicine and pharmacology.
