About me

  • I am a senior pediatric consultant at the Unit of Pediatric Emergency Care, Astrid Lindgren Children’s Hospital, and an associate professor in Global Health with over 15 years of clinical and research experience across Sweden, Uganda, Tanzania, and Malawi.
My work focuses on improving pediatric emergency care in low-resource settings through evidence-based interventions. As a principal investigator and co-investigator in several international trials, I have a strong track record in pragmatic clinical research, capacity-building collaborations, and knowledge translation.
I lead interdisciplinary teams and mentor PhD candidates in global child health, diagnostics, and quality improvement. I am also the lead coordinator of a regional partnership between Region Stockholm and Jinja City, Uganda, aimed at improving the quality of hospital care for children.

Research

  • I did my PhD on the management of pediatric pneumonia symptoms in Uganda (Kampala and Iganga/Mayuge) and my postdoc on causes of non-malarial febrile illness with the Joint Malaria Programme and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in Tanzania (Muheza).
My current research is focused on strengthening pediatric emergency and critical care, with a particular emphasis on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Through the generation of clinically relevant and implementation-oriented evidence, I aim to inform guidelines, decision-support tools, and care pathways that improve the quality of care for severely ill children in resource-constrained settings.
A defining feature of my work is its strong practice and implementation focus: studies are designed not only to address important clinical questions, but also to enable data-driven quality improvement and support sustainable change in routine clinical care.

Teaching

  • My teaching spans university-level education and clinical practice across Sweden, Uganda, and Malawi, encompassing medical students, master’s and PhD students, and healthcare professionals.
Current activities include bedside teaching in paediatrics, lecturing in global health at the master’s level, and leading a five-day Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment (ETAT+) course for Ugandan health workers — including the development of course materials now approved by the Ugandan Ministry of Health.
I supervise medical students, master’s students, and doctoral candidates, and have served as the course leader for the elective course “Global Medicine” at Uppsala University. I have also contributed to curriculum development for the global health module in the new medical program.
