About me

    1. I am a researcher in Orofacial Pain and Oral Medicine with more than 25 years of combined academic, clinical, and research experience. I am currently affiliated with Karolinska Institutet, where my work integrates clinical expertise with translational pain research.
    2.
    3. I hold a specialty in Oral Medicine and am a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain (ABOP). My clinical and academic background includes extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of complex oral and orofacial conditions. I have also completed advanced clinical training in orofacial pain at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), with a focus on temporomandibular disorders and chronic orofacial pain.
    4.
    5. My work combines clinical insight, research, and evidence synthesis, with ongoing engagement in interdisciplinary and international collaborations.

Research

  • My research interests span chronic orofacial pain, including temporomandibular disorders (TMD), neuropathic pain, and chronic primary headaches. In parallel, I have a strong interest in oral mucosal diseases and oral manifestations of systemic disorders, particularly in medically complex populations.

I am particularly interested in how oral health status relates to general health, quality of life, and functional outcomes in patients. My research also explores patient-reported outcomes, interdisciplinary care models, and translational approaches that bridge clinical practice and research.

Current and future research directions include:

    • Orofacial pain and headache disorders
    • Oral-systemic health interactions and multimorbidity
    • Neuropathic pain conditions (e.g., trigeminal neuralgia, burning mouth syndrome)
    • Oral mucosal lesions
    • Sleep and pain interaction, including dental sleep medicine
    • Patient-reported outcomes and quality of life
    • Interdisciplinary and translational research in oral health

Teaching

  • I have extensive experience in undergraduate and postgraduate education in Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain. My teaching has covered a broad range of topics, including the diagnosis and management of complex pain disorders, oral mucosal diseases and oral manifestations of systemic conditions.

    My teaching areas include:

    • Temporomandibular disorders (TMD)
    • Oral mucosal lesions
    • Primary headache disorders
    • Oral manifestations of systemic diseases
    • Trigeminal neuralgia and neuropathic pain
    • Burning mouth syndrome
    • Dental sleep medicine and management of sleep-related breathing disorders

I have also supervised student research projects and contributed to the academic development of dental and healthcare professionals. My teaching approach emphasizes integration of clinical reasoning, evidence-based practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
