About me
I am a registered dietitian specialising in hepatology with over 15 years of experience at Karolinska University Hospital. My focus is on clinical nutrition therapy for patients with chronic liver disease, including liver transplantation. Currently, I am a postdoctoral clinical researcher in the Hagström research group, integrating clinical practice with research to advance nutritional therapy and improve outcomes for individuals with liver disease.
- I also co-coordinate the Clinical Nutrition branch at the Centre for Nutrition at KI.
The primary objective of my research is to investigate the correlation between self-care practices, such as nutritional interventions and physical activity, and various health outcomes in liver disease. Current projects include research studies on the importance of nutrition for disease progression in chronic liver disease, both in patients with MASLD, PSC, alcohol-related liver disease and liver cirrhosis.
I collaborate internationally as an active member of the EASL Task Force for Nurses and Allied Health Professionals, serve on the working group updating the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) guidelines for clinical nutrition in liver disease, and collaborate with members of the European Reference Network for Rare Liver Diseases.
Research
Nutritional Intake and Liver Diseases: Investigating dietary quality and nutrient intake in individuals with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
Patient Perspectives: Exploring the experiences and perspectives of dietary management among individuals with liver cirrhosis and dietary beliefs and habits in individuals with PSC.
Sarcopenic Obesity and Liver Cirrhosis: Investigating the prevalence of sarcopenic obesity in individuals with liver cirrhosis and how this condition can be treated.
Physical Exercise and Quality of Life: Co-supervisor and clinical research dietitian in the randomized controlled trial INSPEL where the aim is to assess the impact of physical exercise on the quality of life in patients with liver cirrhosis.
Alcohol-Related Liver Disease and symptom burden: Examining nutrition impact symptoms in patients with alcohol-related liver disease, including the relationship between symptom burden and disease severity, and associations between nutrition impact symptoms, health-related quality of life, and sobriety. Additionally, researching nutritional strategies in alcoholic hepatitis.
Teaching
My teaching contributions extend across multiple programs at both Karolinska Institutet and Uppsala University. I lecture on clinical nutrition with a focus on gastroenterological diseases, liver disease, and metabolic health. At Karolinska Institutet, I am involved in various educational programs, including the Medical program, the Master’s program in Nutrition Science, and the Dentistry program. Additionally, I serve as a lecturer for the Dietitian program at Uppsala University.
