About me

  • I have been working on the design and development of intelligent systems for healthcare since 1999, driven by a long-standing interest in using technology to better understand and improve real clinical practice. My research focuses on Interactive Process Mining and process-oriented data science techniques to analyse, represent, and manage complex healthcare processes, as well as to model healthcare pathways and human behaviour using real-world data. A central aim of my work is to make data-driven models more interpretable, usable, and meaningful for clinicians, managers, and researchers by combining interactive methods with domain knowledge.

I am Deputy Director of the SABIEN Group at the ITACA Institute, Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain), and a Researcher at the Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology (CLINTEC) at Karolinska Institutet (Sweden). I also collaborate with the Spanish national Primary Care society SEMERGEN in the area of clinical management and quality of care.

I hold a PhD in Computer Science, with a specialization in Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence, from the Universitat Politècnica de València. Over the years, I have participated in more than 60 European and national research projects, funded by the IV to VII European Framework Programmes, H2020, Horizon Europe, and Spanish public research schemes, and have authored over 100 scientific publications.

I regularly contribute to the scientific community as a conference organizer and program committee member, and I am the founder and a member of the Steering Committee of the Process Oriented Data Science for Healthcare Alliance, the main academic society focused on process mining in healthcare, in collaboration with the IEEE Task Force on Process Mining. I also serve as a reviewer and editor for several international journals in Bioengineering and Medical Informatics.
