About me

  • Adjunct Professor of Paediatrics specialising in liver diseases at the
Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology as of 1 January
2021. Primary position: Senior consultant at the Astrid Lindgren Children’s
    Hospital, Karolinska University Hospital

Research

  • Björn Fischler’s research deals with liver disease in children,
particularly different forms of cholestasis. His research is conducted within
international networks and in collaboration with preclinical groups. Fischler
has demonstrated an association between cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and
biliary atresia. He now intends to study whether anti-CMV medication can
    improve the severe prognosis.
Fischler has planned and participated in an international clinical study
showing that a new drug effectively mitigates the symptoms of the cholestatic
condition PFIC and probably improves survival rates. The phase III study has
recently been concluded and the drug has been licensed in Europe and USA. For
another cholestatic disease, Alagille's syndrome, which also affects other
organs as well as trhe immune system, Fischler is collaborating with Emma
Andersson’s research group at KI, which has developed a mouse model. This,
in combination with clinical data from patients, can be used to explain
    pathophysiologies and test new therapies.
