About me

I have been a doctoral student at the Division of Speech and Language Pathology since 2016. In my doctoral project, I examine speech- and language difficulties in young children with early neurodevelopmental disabilities.  

I work as a speech and language pathologist at Habilitation & Health, Stockholm County Council. In my clinical work, I mostly work with children with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, developmental delay and intellectual disability.

Research description

Babbling as a predictor of speech and language difficulties in children with disabilities

Earlier research has shown that the way a child babbles may predict their speech- and language development. In my doctoral project, I study the speech and language development of children with neurological disabilities from age 1 to age 5. One of the aims is to examine whether assessment of babbling may predict speech- and language difficulties and help in identifying children in need of speech and language support.

Treatment for young children with cerebral palsy and speech- and language difficulties.

Although many children with cerebral palsy have speech and language difficulties, few studies have evaluated treatment for this patient group. My doctoral project includes a treatment study, in which the effect of a parent-implemented treatment for young children with cerebral palsy and speech and language difficulties is examined.

In my research, I am interested in speech- and language difficulties in disabilities that appear early in a child’s life – often with delays in motor skills, communication and interaction as an early sign. The umbrella term “Early neurological disabilities” include children who may end up having diagnoses such as cerebral palsy, genetical syndromes or intellectual disability.

In these disabilities there are an increased risk of speech- and language difficulties. Speech- and language difficulties may for example lead to unintelligible speech, difficulties using the correct word to express oneself or problems understanding the speech of others. For some children, the difficulties are so severe, that the child never learns to speak. Speech and language difficulties severely affects a child’s quality of life.

Teaching portfolio

I teach at several different courses at the Study Programme in Speech and Language Pathology. My main teaching area is Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). AAC is an umbrella term for different communicative aids used by people whose speech is not sufficiently understandable for their everyday communication. Another teaching interest is characteristics, assessment and treatment of speech and language disorders in congenital neurological disabilities.
