About me

  • I am a postdoctoral researcher within the field of reproductive epidemiology affiliated to the Clinical Epidemiology Division at the Department of Medicine, Solna. I am combining research with a clinical position as a resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Karolinska University Hospital. I earned a PhD in 2017 with a thesis based on epidemiological studies of the association between rheumatoid arthritis and cardiovascular disease. Currently I am using several of our Swedish health registers to study the effect of various maternal chronic conditions on pregnancy, maternal and child health, and how children and women are affectd by pregnancy outcomes throughout life.

Research

  • Pregnancy is characterized by multiple physiological adaptation to meet the need of the growing and developing fetus, and to prepare for delivery. These adaptations make the pregnancy and postpartum period a vulnerable time point for both the mother and offspring, in particular for women with underlying chronic conditions before they enter pregnancy. Pregnancy is also an important time period for identifying women and children with impaired short- and long-term health. In fact, pregnancy and perinatal outcomes are strongly associated with future health outcomes.

Understanding these different associations is key for antenatal planning, prevention of pregnancy complications, and for evaluating and promoting adequate preventive measurements of impaired long-term health in women and children.

My research is focused on assessing the impact of specific maternal conditions, such as maternal eating disorders, acute hepatic porphyria and heart disease, on pregnancy, perinatal and child health. I am also involved in several projects, in which we are investigating the association between mode of delivery and child health, including the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders.

Thereto, I have a specific interest of sex-specific risk factors for cardiovascular disease. I am currently working on several projects in which we are addressing different aspects of the association between women’s reproductive history and cardiovascular disease risk.
