The current project investigates the identification and management of severe pediatric illness at primary health centers in Malawi. It examines the prevalence of established mortality risk factors and their association with IMCI danger signs, as well as caregiver-related determinants of referral completion. Furthermore, the study explores clinical reasoning behind referral decisions and the use of pre-referral treatments at the health center level. Finally, it assesses healthcare decision-makers’ perspectives on the current referral system and the feasibility of integrating pulse oximetry into routine primary care.
