    Anders Vahlne, M.D.

  • Ph.D., is a professor emeritus in clinical virology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. He is the former chair of the Division of Clinical Virology at the Karolinska Institute and the chief physician (consultant) of the Clinical Virology Laboratory at the Karolinska Hospital. Dr. Vahlne serves as the director for the Karolinska center of excellence of the Global Virus Network (GVN) and is the co-chair of the GVN’s Taskforce on Long COVID-19. He is a Member of the Board of Directors of the Global Virus Network and its Executive Committee. Dr. Vahlne obtained his M.D. and license to practice medicine from the Gothenburg University in 1973 and his Ph.D from the same University in 1978. He is a certified specialist in Clinical Virology since 1978. In 1982-83 he spent a sabbatical at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, CA, on a Fogarty Fellowship. Dr. Vahlne was on the President’s Advisory Board for the Irish National Virus Reference Laboratory at the University College Dublin from 2010 to 2021. From 1972 to 1986 Dr. Vahlne’s research focused on the neuro-pathogenesis of herpes simplex virus infections. He thereafter switched to mainly work on human retroviruses, in particular HIV.
