Research

  • Dr Alphonsus Matovu is a senior consultant general surgeon. Dr Matovu has been part of the research team conducting research on groin hernia repair since 2011. The PhD projects are related to groin hernia surgery in women, an area that has previously been scarcely investigated.

The first study was carried out in 29 hospitals geographically distributed all over Uganda. The study investigated volumes of hernia surgery and patient characteristics as well as surgical techniques used. The met need for groin hernia repair is low and a large proportion of the patients undergoing groin hernia repair were women. A Delphi survey will be conducted to determine best practices in groin hernia repair in women based on current knowledge and experience.

The second PhD project is a double blind, randomized clinical trial comparing two open surgical techniques for groin hernia in women (Trial registration: https://doi.org/10.1186/ISRCTN10330683). In this study, 440 study participants will be enrolled. No previous randomized trials on groin hernia repair in women exist, despite that this condition affects millions of women worldwide. A cost-effectiveness analysis will also be carried out where cost per DALY averted and QALY gained will be determined for the two study arms.

The projects will provide important information for surgical practice and research on groin hernia surgery in low resource settings. No previous randomized trials on groin hernia repair in women exist and therefore the results will be highly relevant also to a wider audience. The aim is to move the needle on clinical global surgery research relating to this condition affecting over 200 million people worldwide.
