Head of Department's Christmas letter 2018

Dear colleagues,

The year of 2018 has been an exciting and eventful year, as is every year at KI!

Many of the researchers at NVS's different divisions have been noted during the year for their successful research as well as receiving large funding. It is also gratifying to see that scientific collaborations are increasing between the divisions, but also between the departments at KI and with other universities nationally and internationally. One measure of this (among others) is that NVS is ranked as one of the top departments at KI as to how much our publications are quoted, adjusted by subject area (cf).

NVS educational organization, which we built up as we took over the entire responsibility for the occupational therapy, physiotherapy and nursing programmes in 2016 and from 2017 the 11 specialist nursing programmes, has evolved into a well-functioning and professional organization. I would like to thank everyone who works with education at NVS in one way or the other for your major efforts during the year.

From 1 January 2018, NVS´ 11 divisions became 8. This reorganization has also worked well, which became evident when several of the divisions moved in 2018: to the new NEO building at the KI Campus Flemingsberg in February (division of Clinical geriatrics and parts of the division of Neurogeriatrics), to the Widerströmska House at KI Campus Solna in May (division of ARC) and to the BioClinicum building in October (parts of the division of Neurogeriatrics). All the moves have been carried out incredibly smoothly and well and I would like to thank all of you who were involved. In particular, I would like to thank all colleagues at BioClinicum for your patience and positive attitude, despite the fact that you had the move postponed a number of times before it eventually took place.

An additional smaller division change will take place from January 1, 2019, when the division of Social Work will be included as a research group in the division of Family medicine and primary care. A division needs a certain size in order to function effectively and there are only benefits as I see it when the academic skills in the field of social work are added to the division of Family medicine and primary care.

As you are aware of, a major reorganization of KI´s management organization has been carried out during 2018, going into effect by Jan 1 2019.

A new faculty board has been created where decisions for KI will be taken. The three current boards will become committees (for research, research education and education) and will provide support for the faculty board. I am proud that several colleagues at NVS have been chosen to be members of the committees and the faculty board.

The departments have been divided into three departmental groups (KI Campus Syd, KI Campus Solna and KI Campus Nord), headed by a Dean, a new position at KI.

NVS will belong to the departmental group KI Campus Syd together with six other departments (depts BioNut, Clintec, Labmed, Medicine H, Dental Med and Clin Sci and edu at SÖS).

In the new organization, the prefekt´s mandate and powers to lead her/his department will remain unchanged. The news is that the prefekt reports to the Dean.

I am appointed by the KI president to become Dean of KI Syd. It feels challenging and exciting. There are a number of issues common to the departments that the Dean can activate and bring to the attention of the KI management. Similarly, issues discussed at the KI management can be more quickly embedded at the departmental level through the Dean's discussions with the prefects.

This means that a new head of NVS will be needed and the recruitment process is ongoing. However, a new prefekt of NVS will not be in place before I leave. I will remain in office until February 1 to close the balancing of the books for 2018.

As of February 1, 2019, Eric Westman, who is now the deputy/assistant has been appointed by the Vice president of KI to be the acting head of the NVS.

He will be supported by the deputy/assistant heads Caroline Graff and Ann Langius-Eklöf. They are all in my management team and are experienced leaders. They have my great trust and I am convinced they will lead NVS in an excellent way until a new head is in place.

However, it feels a bit sad to leave NVS. However, as Dean, I will still have a lot of contact with NVS and NVS is very important in the KI Syd departmental group.

Since I do not finish as prefect until February 1, I will invite you to a closure mingle January 23rd. I will get back to you with more details.

In summary, NVS has had a very successful and busy year. As usual time goes fast when you have fun! NVS, as is all KI, is a dynamic organization and workplace. NVS with its skilled, adept and flexible coworkers is well prepared to meet future challenges.

My departmental management and I would like to thank all of you for your excellent work and efforts during 2018 and wish you a well-deserved Christmas holiday!

Warm Christmas greetings and Happy New Year,

Institutionsledningen through Mia
