Murine Stem Cells Unit

Murine Stem Cells Unit (MSCU) provides services in the field of mouse embryonic stem cells and related techniques including characterization, differentiation, and cryopreservation of genetically modified mouse embryonic stem cell (mESC) lines.

About us

MSCU is a well-resourced laboratory with all the equipment necessary to conduct experiment in pre-implantation embryology and stem cells. We have long experience in mESC and hESC isolation, derivation, culturing and differentiation. In addition, we can successfully use frozen transgenic mouse embryos to derive mESCs thereby circumventing the use of surrogate mothers or breeding.

MSCU belongs to the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition at Karolinska Institutet and collaborated with Karolinska Center for transgene technologies (KCTT, part of the Karolinska Institute Mouse Models, KIMM).

We are primarily serving researchers at Karolinska Institutet but are also open for researchers at other institutes and companies in Sweden and abroad.

Customers with scientifically valuable strains can upon approval get their strains cryopreserved for free at KIM. KCTT offers chargeable ES cell derivation from already frozen strains.

At MSCU, we can assist you further with the following chargeable services:

Services offered

  • Adapting embryonic stem cells to feeder free culture
  • Characterization of embryonic stem cells
  • Consolidation of the cell lineage of embryonic stem cells
  • Cryopreservation of consolidated lineage at early passages
  • Thawing of mouse embryonic stem cell lines
  • Differentiation of cells toward desired lineage/cell type
  • Consolidation of progenitor/ specialized cells in feeder free culture condition
  • Gene editing of cells using CRISPR/Cas9 technology (Gene knock-out in mESC)
  • Transfection of cells with reporter genes (GFP, LacZ, Luciferase, etc)
  • Organoid generation for in vitro assays
  • We provide advise in designing cell experiment
  • Hands-on training workshops including protocols
  • Shipping of cryopreserved material

We can also work on research group specific needs and assist further in more complex experiments.

To use our services

All services that include the use of animals will need prior approval from your regional animal ethics committee.
