Intriguing trauma reports from Soweto, South Africa
A large number of participants gathered to listen to ST doctor and KI alumus Stefan Sjödin's reports on how the trauma unit at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, South Africa, works with intensive trauma care.
Stefan Sjödin, KI alumnus and ST doctor in anesthesia and intensive care at University Hospital of Umeå, left Sweden during the fall to do a three month practice at one of the most hectic trauma units in the world: Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto (also known as "Bara"), South Africa. As a former journalist, he wrote about his observations and experiences on his noticed blog, "Traumarapporter", with thousands of daily views.
KI Alumni had the pleasure to have Stefan do a lecture about his time at "Bara" at Medicinska Föreningen's premises in May 2023. A diverse group of partcipants eagerly listened to him talk about his realizations from working in the busy trauma unit. Daily, severely wounded people from Johannesburg and close by areas were rushed to the hosptal with wounds and injuries from gun-shots, fires and car accidents. Many curious students and fellow practitioners posed questions that Stefan resoned about, leaving us all with new insights on how to deal with traumatic injuries as well as respecting the foreign culture you might be working in.
