EMIS 2024 – Sweden
EMIS is a European Internet-based survey aimed at men who have sex with men and trans people. It was carried out for the first time in 2010 in 38 European countries and most recently in 2017 in 50 countries, the majority of which were European.
The overall aim of EMIS is to increase knowledge in terms of behaviour, risk-taking, testing habits, and knowledge about HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), as well as to contribute with updated knowledge to be able to plan HIV and STI prevention work and other care efforts. The project is carried out by Maastricht University (Netherlands), Robert Koch Institute and Deutsche Aidshilfe (Germany) and has been approved by the Ethics Review Committee of the Psychology and Neuroscience (ERCPN). Karolinska Institutet manages the recruitment for the survey which has been approved by the Swedish Ethical Review Authority. The study will be conducted in 2024m via an internet-based online survey.
The survey will be conducted using a secure online tool connected to a protected server at Maastricht University. The questionnaire will contain a range of measures of behaviour, risk taking, testing habits, knowledge of HIV/sexually transmitted infections, determinants of sexual risk behavior and abuse. The survey has been developed by an international group of researchers and healthcare providers at public health institutions, universities and voluntary organizations working with HIV, LGBTQ health and human rights, in over 40 European countries.
This round of the survey is funded by government funds from Belgium, Estonia, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Inviting participants from the Western Balkans, South Caucasus and Central Asian countries is made possible via funding from the Global Health Protection Program (German Ministry of Health). EMIS-2023/24 is part-funded by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
You are welcome to participate in the study if you are an adult. You can end your participation at any time without any negative consequences. As a participant, you will answer a number of questions about various areas linked to socio-demographic information, sexual health, sex habits and drug habits, general questions about access to care and care needs, and your view on a number of prevention methods about HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. In total, the questionnaire takes 30 minutes to answer. There are no risks or discomfort associated with participating in the survey. You will be asked to answer questions about your sex life. There are no direct benefits to participating in the study, but you will contribute to important research that will directly affect HIV prevention work in the countries included in the study.
No personal data will be stored.
Research data will be published and used in other research but only in such a way that it will not be able to be linked back to you.
This applies to the following information:
- Lifestyle information (e.g. smoking, alcohol use, sex life)
- Physical characteristics (e.g. sexual health)
- Psychological characteristics (e.g. personality traits, feelings of depression)
- Demographic characteristics (eg age, gender, ethnicity, income, employment status)
- Personal relationships (e.g. number of sexual partners, relationship status)
- Health-related data (e.g. (history of) HIV diagnosis, HIV prevention measures and HIV care)
- Type of research data (eg survey data).
