KI-MDACC Collaborative Grants 2020/ SINF

Karolinska Institutet (KI) is part of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MD Anderson) Sister Institution Network Fund (SINF) program, and now participates for the sixth time in the SINF grant call for applications.

Applications for collaborative 1-2 year project grants for cancer research projects involving KI in Stockholm and MD Anderson at The University of Texas, is done by a two step process in 2020. In the first step a letter of intent LOI has to be submitted to MD Anderson (deadline 31st January 2020). Upon review of LOIs (by MD Anderson The Sister Institution Network Fund Review Committee), a shortlist of applicants will be invited to submit full applications via MD Anderson Submittable for which they will be provided an online link. Applicants will need to create an account using MD Anderson log in credentials. Full Application submission deadline is 11:59 p.m. CST on Mon., March 16, 2020.

Only projects using complementary expertise and developed in collaboration between faculty/staff at MD Anderson and KI with principal investigators (PI) from each institution will be considered for funding.

At KI, only senior group leaders (PhD) with at least 2 years of salary/fellowship secured and working at least 50% as scientists at a KI department can apply.

At MD Anderson the funding mechanism is the Sister Institution Network Fund (SINF) and the MD Anderson PI needs to meet the criteria set for this funding instrument. Note that in this funding cycle focus is on new collaborative projects and a requirement is that the applicant is not already engaged in collaborative research within the network. Kindly thoroughly read the SINF grant criteria and eligibility requirements as set by MD Anderson (guidelines and information below).

The total funding per project will consist of a maximum of 800,000 SEK + 25% INDI (Cancer Research KI funding to the KI partner) and $ 100,000 (MD Anderson funding for the MD Anderson partner of the joint project) over a two-year period. Up to two projects will be funded by Cancer Research KI.

Other MD Anderson Sister Institutions may participate together with the KI and MD Anderson partners, with funding levels and mechanisms for investigators at collaborating institutions to be determined by their home institution (MD Anderson states that strong preference will be given to projects involving more than one Sister Institution).

Funding provided by KI may be used for costs for personnel (except applicant’s position and stipends), consumables and travel cost for exchanges and visits to the partner institution.

Application procedure

We would urge the researchers to contact the Cancer Research KI office when they have received an invitation for the full proposal stage to ensure that all necessary documentations will be in place.

Please send the following documents to by March 16, 2020 (Due to the time difference, we will accept applications that have been submitted by deadline on the 16th to MD Anderson and then sent by email to Cancer Research KI on the morning of the 17th local Stockholm time):

  • A pdf of the complete SINF application as submitted by the MD Anderson partner in the MD Anderson online system.
  • A separate KI component budget in SEK for the StratCan/KI funding of up to 800.000 SEK (total for the 2-year period).
