Om mig

I am a Public Health Physician and Professor of Global Health. My formative work has been in East Africa over the last 20 years working on healht systems and implementation science in the fiels of child survival, perinatal quality of care and capacity development. I am currently the Chief of the Health Section in UNICEF, based in New York.

University Medical Degree, Uppsala University

Master of Public Health, Harvard University

PhD, Uppsala University

Postdoc, Karolinska Institutet and Makerere University

Starting in IMCI, I have been part of developing what is now known as ICCM, where my current interest is to apply it also to private sector. The dual aim of IMCI, ICCM and frontline algorithms is to improve BOTH quality of care AND rational use of drugs, in the interest of cost savings and reducing antimicrobial resistance.

I have also a large interest in approaches to improving quality of perinatal care, where increasingly it appears we need to focus on facilities, now that mothers are coming to deliver with skilled attendants.

Improving Governance through Improved District Planning and accountability is another interest of mine.

Of late I have taken an interest in the growing burden of Non Communicable Diseases, where high, middle and low-income health systems are all under strain.

I firmly believe that Capacity Development is key to improve health services and health status in the world, and have developed the Double PhD degree program with Makerere University, Uganda, where I am also a visiting professor.
