We conduct research and teaching regarding the function of the brain - from a molecular level to the effect on society. This activity is closely integrated with medical clinics within Stockholm. The Department is organised into five sections, encompasses about 350 employees, 250 Ph.D students and has a budget of close to 300 MSEK.

A drug that is currently used for cancer can relieve and slow down the progression of the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis (MS) in rats, according to a new study published in PLOS ONE. The discovery, which was made by researchers at Karolinska Institutet, might one day lead to better forms of treatment for patients with MS.

Mats Olsson has been awarded 3 year grants from Swedish Research Council (Social science) and the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation for research examining whether man can sense illness in a person with the sense of smell. This is possible in animal models. More specifically, we wish to examine if we can detect chemo-sensory signals at an early stage of innate immune response and what parts of the brain that are processing the signal. Furthermore, we wish to find what biomarker(s), perceptual or not, that we deliver to the environment.
Martin Ingvar has received a 4 year grant from the Swedish Researach Council (Medicine) for the project decision making in context. The project is a continuation of previous work on decision making locally in the group. The project will be developed as to use the National MEG facility that will open 2013. The aim is a better understanding of how aware and unaware signals influences decision making including those decisions that form the individuals choices in health and life style.
