History and Cultural Heritage
Karolinska Institutet was founded in 1810 by King Karl XIII. KI was the first Swedish university to focus exclusively on medicine and today it has a rich cultural heritage, including an extensive collection of medical literature dating back to the 16th century.

Prizes and cermonies
The Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology is awarded by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet in the first week of October each year. Many other prizes and awards are also presented during the academic ceremonies.
