The Vesalius Census

2017-12-0618:00 Hagströmerbiblioteket, Haga Tingshus, Annerovägen 12Annan

This talk traces the reception history of Andreas Vesalius' De humani corporis fabrica, the first illustrated atlas of anatomy. It relies on the recently completed census of the Fabrica, which has documented the surviving copies of the 1543 and 1555 editons of the work. It shows how political and economic considerations have shaped how copies of this impressive and expensive volume traveled within Europe and beyond in the past five hundred years, and how readers responded to the text and the illustrations.
