At Karolinska Institutet, the managing organisation for all aspects of animal experimentation in research is Comparative Medicine. Our scientists also have access to animal facilities managed by the Karolinska University Hospital.

Animal Behavior Core Facility (ABCF)

The Animal Behavior Core Facility (ABCF) is the new core facility at Karolinska Institutet for behavioral studies in mice and rats. ABCF is designed to provide optimal environment, state-of-the-art instrumentation and technical/educational support to perform behavioral tests ranging from basic phenotype characterization to advanced analyses.

Core Facility for Germ-free Research

Germ-free (GF) mice are derived and raised in an environment devoid of resident bacterial flora (microbiota). At Karolinska Institutet, GF models are housed at the Core Facility for Germ-free Research (CFGR). This core facility is a part of the Karolinska Institutet Mouse Models (KIMM), and offers its services to academic researchers as well as to biotech and pharmaceutical industries.

Import Portal

The KIMM Import Portal (Portalen in Swedish) is the animal quarantine core facility within the Karolinska Institutet Mouse Models (KIMM) organisation.

Manipulation of gene expression during mouse development is a powerful tool for querying the role of specific genes in development and disease. Infinigene is a facility which utilizes ultrasound-guided nano-injection to introduce DNA-modifying agents during embryonic development, or in adult mice.

Karolinska Experimental Research and Imaging Centre (KERIC) conducts Imaging analyses in experimental systems in combination with experimental surgery in large animals like swine as well as in rodents. This facility is managed by the Karolinska University Hospital in Solna (North Campus area).

The Karolinska Institutet Mouse Models (KIMM) is a core facility umbrella offering production, phenotype analyses, archiving of mouse mutants and experimental platforms to understand the role of genes and the microbiota. The KIMM umbrella facility includes the KCTT facility, the Germ-free facility and an import portal.

Murine Stem Cells Unit

Murine Stem Cells Unit (MSCU) provides services in the field of mouse embryonic stem cells and related techniques including characterization, differentiation, and cryopreservation of genetically modified mouse embryonic stem cell (mESC) lines. MSCU is a well-resourced laboratory with all the equipment necessary to conduct experiment in pre-implantation embryology and stem cells.

The Preclinical Laboratory (PKL) offers cryopreservation techniques and re-derivation services. Managed by the Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge (South Campus area).
