Stem cells, engineering and FACS
Cutting edge fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) technologies are mandatory elements in the toolbox of a leading medical university. Karolinska Institutet also provide state of the art iPS technology, and platforms for material engineering.
Developmental Tissue Bank
The Developmental Tissue Bank provides research groups with defined human embryonic and fetal tissue (“prenatal tissue”), derived from routine abortions, through a collaboration with various clinics. After the tissue is transferred to the facility, we determine the developmental stage, identify the retrieved tissue, perform any necessary dissection, and process the tissue as agreed with the user.
FACS Biomedicum
The Biomedicum flow cytometry core facility (BFC) is a shared resource laboratory that will provide researchers with the capability of performing a wide range of flow cytometry experiments.

High Throughput Genome Engineering
The High Throughput Genome Engineering (HTGE) facility provides affordable access to high throughput functional genomic screens using the CRISPR/Cas9 system in cell lines. Pooled CRISPR/Cas9 screening enables parallel interrogation of thousands to tens of thousands of genes for involvement in biological processes of interest. HTGE provides access to verified lentiviral CRISPR guide libraries for whole genome and more targeted loss- and gain of function studies (CRISPR knock-out, CRISPR inhibition, CRISPR activation). They also offer generation of stable Cas9-expressing lines in users’ cells of interest.
iPS Core Facility
The reprogramming facility provides a reprogramming service to supply scientists with human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Patient-specific iPS cell lines opens up unique opportunities to in vitro study and create cellular models of human disease. The facility reprograms human fibroblast cells using non-modified RNAs (NM-RNAS), which is a non-integrating method.

Karolinska Genome Engineering
The Karolinska Genome Engineering Facility (KGE) are specialists in CRISPR/Cas technology, and it is their mission to facilitate and accelerate your research by providing flexible and affordable gene-editing services in cells. Your cell type, your edit – from strategy design to delivery of a cell pool with quantified allele frequency. KGE is a branch of the High Throughput Genome Engineering, a national SciLifeLab facility (see above).
Karolinska Institutet Stem Cell Organoid
The main goal of Karolinska Institutet Stem Cell Organoid (KISCO) is to assist researchers, mainly within the university and in Sweden, to harbour the potential of pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) in studying complex human disease mechanisms. A key tool offered and that will be continuously developed is the derivation and use of in vitro organoid systems of mouse and human stem cell origin. KISCO is unique in offering these services as a core facility in Sweden.
MedH Flow Cytometry Facility
The Flow Cytometry Facility at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge (South Campus) offers a broad range of high quality services including assistance with experimental design, training for independent users, and operator-assisted services for cell analysis and cell sorting.

Micro and Nanofabrication Core Facility
The Micro and Nanofabrication Core Facility (MCF) offers a diverse range of Micro and Nanostructuring techniques for a wide scope of applications in the fields of life-science and medicine. The MCF aims to bridge the gap between engineering and biology at Karolinska Institutet and to provide common grounds with respect to suitable material of use of modular design and tunable structures for biomedical purposes.
VirusTech Core Facility
Genetically engineered viruses provide powerful tools for introducing desired genes in cells. To facilitate the use of this state-of-art methodology, the VirusTech core facility at KI's Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics specializes in the production, purification and concentration of such virus particles.
