Biosafety and translational facilities
Karolinska Institutet collaborates closely with the healthcare sector, mainly in the Stockholm county area. On this page we have collected clinical and translational research infrastructures and different kinds of laboratory resources, including BSL-3.

Biosafety Level 3 laboratory at Biomedicum
The Biosafety Level (BSL)-3 laboratory is a state-of-the-art infrastructure located in Biomedicum, Solna campus. The facility enables research on highly-pathogenic bacteria, viruses and parasites.
BSL3 laboratory at ANA Futura
The ANA Futura BSL3 laboratory is situated in Campus Flemingsberg. The facility has three culture rooms for work with airborne pathogens, and a dedicated room for FACS sorting. This facility is a resource for academia, health care and industry.

Clinical Research Center
Clinical Research Center (CRF) is a common resource for researchers from different departments at Karolinska Institutet and/or clinics at Karolinska University Hospital. At CRF researchers have, among other things, access to advanced techniques such as production and analysis of transgenic animals as well as high-throughput mutation analysis in addition to well-equipped animal departments. The aim is to create a high quality infrastructure equipped to provide services requested by the research groups at KI’s south campus.
e-Health Core Facility
The e-Health Core Facility aims to establish a sustainable and efficient organisation to support healthcare research and development at KI, in the Stockholm region and nationally. The facility consists of four nodes at different departments at KI.
Karolinska Cell Therapy Center and Vecura
Karolinska Cell Therapy Center (KCC) and Vecura supports and facilitates for researchers, clinicians and industrial companies that aim to develop quality assured Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) and cell therapy products for unmet clinical needs.
Karolinska Trial Alliance
Karolinska Trial Alliance (KTA) is a professional Clinical Research Center at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, supported by Stockholm County Council (SLL) and the Karolinska Institute. KTA is highly specialized and has a comprehensive knowledge within the field and gives hands-on support for clinical research to optimize the process of conducting clinical trials.
Karolinska University Laboratory
Clinical sampling and sample analysis provided by healthcare professionals. This facility is runned by the Stockholm Region, in close connection to the Karolinska University Hospital.
Genomic Medicine Center Karolinska
Genomic Medicine Center Karolinska (GMCK) is a KI/SLL core facility for translational research, clinical trials and diagnostics, focusing on transitioning of next generation sequencing (NGS) from basic science to clinical diagnostic settings. The facility supports KI and KS researchers and clinical users in aspects covering experimental design, data generation, data analysis and solutions for clinical decision support. The facility is operates as a joint unit between the Clinical Genomics facility at SciLifeLab and a genomics unit at Karolinska university laboratory. When applicable, the facility will support researches by facilitating the contact with other genomics and high-throughput facilities at KS(/SLL), KI and Scilifelab.
Stockholm Medical Image Laboratory and Education
The Stockholm Medical Image Laboratory and Education (SMILE) is a joint core facility of Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital, with the purpose to facilitate evaluation of medical digital images, irrespective of source. SMILE is the translational hub where clinicians, researchers and doctoral students from academy, healthcare and industry meet and benefit from the collected competence in image analysis, visualization and quantification. While using the images, tools and innovations for improved diagnostics and patient care, near collaboration with medtech companies is a prerequisite.

uMOVE
The primary goal of the uMOVE core facility is to provide a state of the art platform for investigation of human movement and behavior for mainly researchers within care sciences via multi-disciplinary approaches.
uMOVE will provide new knowledge and develop evaluation methods of the dynamical aspects of movement in interplay with psychological aspects − taking into account the impact of cognitive and emotional factors on movement such as the impact of pain, depression or cognitive processes (and vice versa).

VirusTech Core Facility
Genetically engineered viruses provide powerful tools for introducing desired genes in cells. To facilitate the use of this state-of-art methodology, the VirusTech core facility at KI's Department of Cell and Molecular Biology specializes in the production, purification and concentration of such virus particles.
