Agreements confirming the partnership

The first Memorandum of Understanding confirming the partnership, and the initiation of the double degree program, was signed in 2003. In 2011 the two universities entered into a new Memorandum of Understanding for their mutual development. It was signed and endorsed during a formal ceremony at Makerere University in Kampala. The MOU was extended 2015 for a new five year period.

An implementation Agreement was signed on 11 February 2015, regarding a Joint Doctoral Training programme towards degree of Doctor of Philosophy PhD, under which a substantial number of students affiliated to Makerere University College of Health Sciences have completed a double PhD degree at KI and MAK in the past years. The agreement was amended and thus prolonged February 2020 and the Sida funded collaboration has been prolonged until June 2022.

The exchange of students and teachers at several of the educational programmes at both institutions has also been regulated through agreements, renewed on a five year basis.

Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health (CESH)

Karolinska Institutet and Makerere University are jointly working, since 2019, to establish a Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health (CESH).  It is a digital platform through which the aim is to address complex health challenges of today and tomorrow within the broader 2030 Agenda. Initially, the first projects are focusing on sexual and reproductive health and rights for the most vulnerable, children and adolescents and characterizing the risk for NCDs in low resource settings.
