BRAIN Initiative: Biology and Biophysics of Neural Stimulation (R01 Clinical Trial Optional): NIH

A central goal of the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies Initiative (BRAIN) is to develop new and improved perturbation technologies suitable for controlling specified cell types and circuits to modulate function in the central nervous system. This FOA seeks applications to systematically characterize, model, and validate the membrane, cellular, circuit, and adaptive-biological responses of neuronal and non-neuronal cells to various types of stimulation. Development of new technologies and therapies, as well as of disease models are outside the scope of this FOA. However, activities related to combining multiple recording modalities are allowed. As part of this program, investigators will be required to participate in a consortium to develop standards and model systems for the evaluation of current and next generation neuromodulation technologies.

Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation, US
Biomarkers development program

The Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation invites letters of intent for its biomarkers development program. This supports the development and validation of biomarkers that will enhance the design and performance of clinical trials for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Priority is given to projects that: ● Validate biomarkers previously identified in samples from well-characterized human subjects, ● Focus on biomarkers with a rational biological connection to the disease process and are supported by a reasonable body of preliminary data, ● Use validated methods for quantifying and qualifying biomarkers. Developing novel technologies is a lower priority.

Program to accelerate clinical trials
This supports projects that aim to increase the number of innovative treatments tested in humans for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The program funds: clinical trials through phase 2a of novel drug candidates, including small molecules and biologics including antibodies, oligonucleotides, peptides, gene therapies, cell therapies; proof-of-concept biomarker-based trials in patients for repurposed or repositioned drugs; regulatory studies for investigational new drug or clinical trial application preclinical packages that are required before testing novel drugs in human subjects.

Drug discovery program

This supports projects that aim to advance novel lead molecules to the clinical candidate selection stage or build preclinical evidence in relevant animal models for repurposed or repositioned drugs. Areas of interest include: neuroprotection; inflammation; vascular function; mitochondria and metabolic function; proteostasis; apolipoprotein E; epigenetics; and synaptic activity and neurotransmitters.
