Gastrointestinal Mechanisms Contributing to HIV Pathogenesis (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed): NIH

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) seeks to bring together investigators with complementary expertise in HIV and in gastrointestinal mucosal pathobiology to dissect fundamental processes within the gastrointestinal tract that impact infection, persistence, and comorbidities. This multidisciplinary approach should lead to comprehensive, in-depth mechanistic analyses and advance progress toward alleviating comorbidities that afflict people living with HIV and toward developing a cure. This FOA seeks interdisciplinary studies, led by Multiple-PD/PI teams, on the effects of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) or its treatment within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.  The emphasis is on fundamental mechanisms within the GI tract that impact HIV infection and persistence, GI immune or microbial homeostasis, enteropathy, disease progression, and the development of important comorbidities.  A Multiple PD/PI leadership structure is required. The Multiple PD/PI team must include at least one PD/PI whose expertise is primarily on an aspect of HIV related to the proposed project and at least one PD/PI with appropriate expertise in an aspect of gastrointestinal pathobiology.  The collaboration should provide a more rigorous, thorough, and in-depth evaluation of potential mechanisms than might otherwise be achieved.

Closing date: March 14, 2019, by 5:00 PM local time of applicant organization.

Novel Mechanism Research on Neuropsychiatric Symptoms (NPS) in Alzheimer's Dementia (R01 and R21): NIH

The goal of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage applications for studies that will enhance knowledge of mechanisms associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in persons with Alzheimer's disease (AD) or Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRD). The findings from such research are expected to advance mechanistic understanding of both biobehavioral and neurobiological pathways leading to NPS, and may provide insights into novel targets for interventions that might alleviate some burden associated with these symptoms, or suggest strategies for preventing the development of NPS as related to AD or ADRD.

Closing date: March 19, 2019, by 5:00 PM local time of applicant organization.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis research programme – therapeutic idea award, US Department of Defense

The Therapeutic Idea Award is designed to promote new ideas aimed at drug or treatment discovery that are still in the early stages of development. Projects that focus primarily on investigating the pathophysiology of ALS are not within the scope of this Funding Opportunity. Development and/or modification of preclinical model systems or the application of high- throughput screens to define or assess lead compounds for ALS treatment are of interest. Innovation and impact are important aspects of the Therapeutic Idea Award. Research deemed innovative may introduce a new paradigm, challenge current paradigms, introduce novel concepts or technologies, or exhibit other uniquely creative qualities that may lead to potential therapeutics for ALS. Impact may be near-term or long-term, but must be significant and move beyond an incremental advancement.
