SFO-V funding of international research visits 2018-19
The Strategic Research Area Health Care Science (SFO-V) is a collaboration between Karolinska Institutet (KI) and Umeå University (UmU). The aim is to strengthen and develop cooperation between health care science and the health and welfare sector through high quality research and activities promoting collaboration, knowledge exchange and social innovation. Health care science is a multidisciplinary research field that spans a number of areas, e.g. health promotion, prevention, care, nursing, rehabilitation, wellbeing and health, and can be carried out by a wide range of professions and disciplines. Research within SFO-V is focused on four core areas:
- Bio-behavioral health care science
In order to encourage international exchange and collaboration in the field of health care science, the SFO-V has dedicated SEK 600 K for travel grants of up to SEK 50 K each. Health care scientists at KI are thus invited to apply for funding regarding one project for one or more visits of a maximum total of three months to a university or research institute outside of Sweden. The funding is intended to cover travel costs, living expenses and accommodation not covered by other funding. The total sum granted is to be used during 2018-19 unless deductible time for parental leave, military service or long-term sick-leave can be proven. A written report on the outcome of the research visit is expected.
Eligible to apply are all health care scientists at KI with a PhD, in need of a travel grant to develop or perform research within any of the SFO-V core areas and employed at KI (> 20%) or formally affiliated to any of its departments.
The application should be written in English, signed by the applicant and include:
- The aim and expected outcome of the visit(s) and how it will be reached through the planned research visit. These could be related to competence development, scientific work, international cooperation (maximum 300 words).
- A description of group or department and a reference person at the hosting university/institute (maximum 100 words).
- Time plan and budget, including SFO-V grant applied and additional funding applied for or granted and be supplemented with:
- A signed invitation letter from the hosting scientist describing the aim of the visit.
- A two-page CV in KI qualifications portfolio format and a publication list.
Evaluation and decision
Evaluation and decision will be taken by the SFO-V steering committee according to how well the applications meet the following criteria:
- The potential of the aim of the visit to develop into future high-quality research collaboration.
- The scientific competence of the applying researcher in relation to scientific seniority.
- The qualifications of the hosting institution and scientist for the purpose of the project.
- A realistic time plan and budget, including other potential funding.
- The fit between the planned research and any of the SFO-V core areas.

Federal Funding agencies
Fundamental Mechanisms of Affective and Decisional Processes in Cancer Control (R01 Clinical Trial Optional): NIH
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage projects to generate fundamental knowledge of affective processes. Basic affective science projects should have key consequences for single (e.g., cancer screening) and multiple (e.g., adherence to oral chemotherapy regimen) event decisions and behaviors across the cancer prevention and control continuum. The FOA is expected to encourage collaboration among cancer control researchers and those from scientific disciplines not traditionally connected to cancer control applications (e.g., affective and cognitive neuroscience, decision science, consumer science) to elucidate perplexing and understudied problems in affective and decision sciences with downstream implications for cancer prevention and control.
