Accounting for cost of complex chronic care: development and applications of time-driven activity-based costing

Brief Description:

Value-Based Health Care, where value is defined as health outcomes achieved per unit cost expended for a specific medical condition, is gaining increasing attention internationally. While the focus has primarily been on the measurement of outcomes, limited progress has been made in the measurement of costs. The first study in this PhD was a systematic literature review that found time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) to be capable of efficiently producing comparable cost estimates of medical conditions, but had been applied to cost either well-understood or low-risk care processes. This thesis is moving forward to explore how TDABC can be applied in the context of complex care for patients with multiple chronic conditions.
