There is a wide range of Swedish courses available.

English may be the working language at research institutions and it may also be sufficient to use English in everyday life, since most Swedes are reasonably fluent in English. However, good Swedish skills facilitate the start of your new life in Sweden and you may find that learning Swedish will help you to integrate more easily.

Learn Swedish in Sweden

At KI

All doctoral students who are admitted to KI are offered to take one Swedish language course free of charge, regardless of their admission dates. Courses are paid by the Board of Doctoral Education. Register at BBi Communication and choose 'PhD student enrolled at KI'. Please, note that this offer does not apply to postdocs or visiting doctoral students.

Staff, researchers, postdocs and doctoral students interested in additional courses are welcome to join. The course fee of 2 756 kr + VAT including a book can be paid by the individual or the hosting department. Register with BBi Communication

  • Evening courses (90 minutes of weekly training for 10 weeks) Starting from the weeks of September 10th/17th
  • Intensive courses (4 half-days of Swedish language training) Course 1: Sept 15-16 and Sept 29-Sept 30, Course 2: Oct 6-7 and Oct 20-21, Course 3: Nov 10-11 and Nov 24-25
  • ​Intensive (start of the term) in August 27-29, 2018 - Register by August 13th

Other courses

Folkuniversitetet, Medborgarskolan, Svenska Nu, Swedish for professionals offer Swedish language courses for individuals. You can study Swedish as a Foreign Language at Stockholm university. There are several recognised tests available that measure proficiency in the Swedish language.

Swedish for immigrants (SFI) provides knowledge of the Swedish language and Swedish society, free of charge. Municipalities have an obligation to offer SFI to newly arrived adult immigrants with a personal identity number. Check with your municipality:
