CfA seminar: Is treatment with asthma drugs doping? Conclusions from a report on Norwegian skiing and an update on doping and asthma treatment.
Speaker: Prof. Kjell Larsson, Institute of Enviromental Medicine. Coffee and tea served 15:30.
The use of asthma medications, in particular beta agonists, among Norwegian top skiers has been in the news frequently the past year. The discussion has been around the possible doping effects of these asthma drugs. As the Winter Olympics are approaching, this is a highly relevant topic.
Prof Kjell Larsson has been involved as an external independent expert reviewer, writing a report for the Norwegian Olympic Committee on the scientific data regarding the possible performance-enhancing effects of asthma medications. Kjell Larsson is an international authority on asthma treatment and he has for many years been involved in the objective assessments of asthma among athletes and their use of asthma medications.
The seminar will summarise his report as well as discuss the regulations from the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) on the use of beta agonists, and what is currently known regarding the dosage of beta-agonist use amongst athletes. There will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion around this topic.
